Behind the jewellery

In case we haven’t met yet I’m Alice, the designer and maker of Alice Stewart Jewellery. I thought what better way to start the blog, than to tell the story of how and why I fell in love with jewellery.

Full of optimism I started University back in 2009 enrolled on a Fine Art degree, wondering with excitement what journey the next few years would take me on. I threw myself into whatever project inspired me most not thinking too much about where exactly I was heading, relishing in the complete creative freedom.

After trying a bit of everything, I was most at home with sculpture but the large-scale pieces I was creating still weren’t something I could see myself doing out in the ‘real world.’ By this point I was feeling the pressure to refine what I wanted to be creating so after some serious soul searching, and advise from a wonderful career adviser, I finally pieced together what was truly important to me. Above all, I knew I wanted to be proud of making something that would be treasured for its fine craftsmanship, and timeless unique style.

I realised I had always been an avid jewellery hobbyist and enjoyed going on courses so I could make myself pieces I couldn’t find anywhere else, so I decided to try out silversmithing and jewellery. I instantly fell in love with the creative processes of bringing a design to life, in a mini piece of wearable artwork - beautiful jewellery that would be cherished and kept. The blossom ring pictured was the very first piece I ever made, and it will always remind me of those early days, enthralled over my bench eager to learn how to create beautiful pieces that would be passed down through the generations.

ABOUT ME

In a world surrounded by throwaway fast fashion, I’ve come to understand just how very important it is to be creating something that will last forever. It’s so rewarding knowing each piece of jewellery is going on to tell its own story, becoming so loved by the person wearing it.

You can find more about the inspirations behind the jewellery over on the about page.
